I wouldn't. I don't like puffers. They are highly aggressive, at best fin nippers, and at worst, killers.

A breeding pair of puffers? Dang near unheard-of.

Is this the fish? http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?ID=50301&genusname=Tetraodon&speciesname=suvattii

Is that $25 CDN?

Looking at the pix, my guess would be that this is possibly a wait-and-pounce feeder: it waits on the bottom of the tank until something comes along, then it pounces.

Aha. More research indicates that this may be the same fish that's called the "pig-nosed" puffer. If so, it might be a fairly mean one....

Promethious is right about puffers- they will nip at each other at best and can't really be trusted with other more docile fish(pretty much any other fish). Puffers are good fun pets to have (and personally i love them) but it wouldnt be a good idea to put them with other fish since they can be soooo agressive. Puffers also require an over-adequete filteration system(they are very messy eaters) and a pretty large fish tank. They will go after not only your fish but your invertabrates or plants if you have any. Even with a big group of puffers one of the extra agressive puffs can bully around the rest of them and make them miserable or prevent one of the more peaceful ones from getting adequete food. Better look into it more before you do anything- But I would personally say they are cute little guys to have around.

yeah! thats it! there are two, and they are fairly large, and they hover along the bottom. they are little brown eggs in the substrate, but the petstore just covers them up, and one of them (not sure whether male or female) sits there hovering over the eggs. I sat and watched them for a few min today, and yes, thats 25$ CDN.

Okay. My guess is that these guys are going to be fairly boring fish until it's feeding time. Then, they may get somewhat viscious. You won't be able to keep any other fish in their tank. I would get at *least* a 20g long tank for these fish -- a 30g would be a lot better.

And you might want to decide now if you want to try raising the fry. There's almost nothing written about these fish, so if you decide to do it, document blinkin' everything. Write it up and I guarantee you'll be able to sell it (Bob will help).

I'm of really mixed opinions on whether or not you should get these fish. On the one hand, these are not the typical puffers by any stretch of the imagination...they're strictly freshwater, and may not accept anything but live food. On the other hand, puffers can be great fish... but then, these may not have the type of puffer behaviors I'm used to seeing. But it would be so very, very cool to get actual data on the reproductive cycle of these fish -- even Fishbase had extremely little. You've got a potential master's thesis in that tank, should you be so inclined. But these fish might be a fair bit of work, and you don't know how much it's going to cost you to feed them.

At least your LFS is selling them as a pair.

I went there today, and still could not decide whether or not to get the pair, the petstore had burried the eggs that were there yesterday, which I don't know why, but, I put them on hold until wednesday, just so that I could decide whether or not to get them. I have a 20 gallon long tank sitting around. They are in a 15 gallon at the store. I completely forgot to ask what they are feeding them, but its probably frozen (this store is really cheap, they will not spend the money on anything). And i would definitely record everything, and forsurely try raising the fry. Well thanks for your suugestions!

Well i just phoned them up, and one of their head staff who hasn't worked since they got them in had noticed eggs on his first day back, so therefore, they raised the price?!? to 75$ for the pair of 50$ each..... I still have them on hold, and yes, they only feed them live foods.

You put them on hold yesterday, so they should have to sell them at yesterday's price.

sorry, that was a little unclear, there was supposed to be a period after "i don't know why". I actually put them on hold this morning :(

Is 75$ CDN (roughly 35$ USD) a good deal for a pair? I'm still hesitent, especially with the price jump. I do have about 30 fancy guppies though, that are saleable size and was thinking of trading them in to bring down the price. I was planning on giving them to the petstore anyways.... and i'm still not sure if the puffers are 2 females or a male and female. There is definitely a female, because one laid eggs. But i don't know if the male is the one hovering over the eggs, or if that is just the mother, and the other fish is just another female..... is there no way to distinguish the male and females apart?

Thank you all!

$35 US might be a bit steep. I think I've seen similar fish, if not the same species, for about $10-$15 each. If you're not positive you have a pair, you're going to want to witness a spawning to figure out if it's the female or the male who's hovering over the eggs.

Well today i bought them, but I'm not bringing them home until this coming weekend, so my tank can finnish cycling. I'm excited! But these guys are brutal! They are like "aquarium size tazmanian devils" they even destroyed the plastic plants in the tank at the store, but i don't mind. And once again, thanks for all your input all!

fry food: hey Ananda? would cyclopeeze (from Jehmco) be a good thing for CA to feed the fry?

I picked up some (got a free stick for getting an LFS to carry it) and it makes a good planktonic food for my corals.
