OK,i fixed my skilter. All it was producing was lots of very wet foam, that smelled kind of bad. I was thinking of how to limit the amount of wetness, because at the rate it was going, it was filling the tray in about 30 minutes. Then it hit me. Why not take a piece of pvc, and glue it on to the overflow spout thing? (the piece that sticks up into the collection cup). So, i found a 6" piece of pvc, i don't remember the diameter, but it fit rather snugly over the spout. Then, I used hot glue around the base, to prevent water from going out the bottom of the tube. I hooked it up last night, and when i got home from school, there was some dark green foam in the cup, and running down the side of the pvc. BTW, i also have a limewood airstone in the bottom of the skimmer tower, which i can control the flow of air/wetness of foam. It seems like the more air let in, the wetter the foam. Just my observations.

This sounds interesting. Let me get this straight, you glued the pvc pipe to the tower and then put the collection cup on top of the pipe? Now I want to try this.

no, i glued the pipe on to the collection cup, so the foam has to travel farther, which makes it more dry. I was originally having problems with TONS of very wet foam, it was almost water. This cut down on the foam. In fact, the foam was so dry, it was sticking to the side and top of the pipe.

My skilter produces wet foam, too, probably something all skilters do. I'll have to try this.

Doesn't that splatter foam and stuff on the wall, etc? Or is the back of the tank/skilter pretty far from the wall?

No, the foam doesn't fly out that fast, it just kind of bubbles over, very slowly. If you needed to, it wouldn't be too hard to make a splash guard of sorts.

I was thing about get a 46 gal bow front tank ( my dad does not like the idea ). I'm trying to start the tank with not spending a hole lot of money.I know that starting a slatwater tank is not cheap. I will have around $1000.00-800.00 to spend on stuff( if my dad says i can ). I can get the tank for $150.00. The live rock for 2.25lb on ebay I would get 30lb for a 46gal tank(2.25lbx30lbs=$67.50). The live sand and testing thing and all the little stuff sould be around $100.00. I wanted to get the skilter, and i see that you had to make a mod. What kind and what brand it yours. I would like your in put.
Thanks
Chris

I don't know if you've noticed, but this thread is 3 years old. I can tell you that a skilter is a waste of money, you're better off getting a good hang-on skimmer (the Aqua C Remora is a good one, and less than $200), and then either a sump or even a good hang on power filter, or a hang on refugium (CPR makes a good one). Your live rock and skimmer is really all the filtration you need, though I would suggest more live rock, at least a lb/gallon. I would put 50lbs in your 46. Also, you have to think about lighting. Your 46 is pretty tall, right? I have a 48 gal bowfront that is tall, and for me to keep any SPS or hard corals I would have to get MH lighting, PCs just won't cut it. How tall is your tank? I'm sure others will chime in, but that's probably some good info to start with.
