pea stuck in goldfish's mouth Posted: Aug 10, 2005 6:36 PM

please, help!

i think my little telescope got a piece of green pea stuck in her mouth. i fed her this morning, went out, and just came back home and saw that there's a piece of pea in the bottom of her throat! she seems to be swimming normally. no labor breathing either. she opens her mouth normal, so im not sure if it's stuck or not. i tried ti remove it with a tweezer, but wasnt able to and am afraid it's going to stress her even more!! she's a very, very tiny fish. can the pea eventually disintegrate in her mouth? should i keep trying to remove it?? im so afraid of hurting her. she's my favorite goldfish!!

be careful if you try to remove it. You could hurt the fish. If there are no physical signs of distress I would let him go and see if it comes out by itself. If he starts showing signs of choking, gagging or anything, something definitly needs to be done. Not sure what, and I am not going to tell you something that might kill your fish. Hope all is well

it's been 8 hours and the pea is still in her throat. she had been swimming on the middle/top of the tank, which is uncommon for her, she's more of a bottom fish, but now she's on the bottom not moving, but she always does it, she takes naps, sometimes i think she's dead and when i slightly tap on the glass she wakes up and starts swimming. so, her behavior seems to be normal, except for the time she was swimming on the middle/top of the tank. no gasping at surface. she would sometimes dart to the surface, but that's another common behavior of her. i tried the tweezers 6 or 7 times. i thought i was stressing her too much and was afraid i would hurt her. so i've stopped for now. i offered her some food, hoping that she would spit out the pea in order to get the new food (frozen bloodworms), but she was able to take the new food WITHOUT spitting the pea out. :? she still can open/close her mouth normally. im hoping this pea will disintegrate inside her throat so that she can either spit it out or get it down.

:) I like it that you care so much, you dont find many fish owners like yourself..any me also! LOL!

I do think she/he will be alright, they are tough fish.

Just keep an eye on them, and keep us updated! ;)

Do try and get some sleep also!

Good luck

10:30 pm and the pea is still there. she's been trying to "sleep" i guess. im lying down myself but i've been checking on her every once in a while. if she survives the night, and the pea is still there, im definitely taking her to the vet and see if he can do something.

thanks for the kind words. i've learned that for some reason goldfish keepers are usually very caring owners.

How bout you let that Pea work its way out of your goldfish's mouth.

Then take the money you would have spent at the Vet and give it to a charity or maybe a family that couldn't afford school clothes for its kids.

Again, im not trying to be a smart-a** but lets give it a little time before we do that.

i think 24 hours will be long enough, no? im sorry but i dont agree with what you just said. one thing has nothing to do with the other. i spend my money the way i want and on whatever i think it's worth paying for. after all that's MY money, MY problem. if you cant help, please, dont come to say stupid things.

So helping Poor kids is less important than wasting money on something that will resolve itself in due time???

How is your fish doing now?

My goldfish once got a stone stuck in its mouth/throat. I really freaked out, he was still breathing but was not moving. I tried for a few minutes to get it out, but was concerned about causing more damage than good. About an hour later [he barely moved at all in that time] he just suddenly spat it out, and was back to normal. He's still alive today almost a year later :)

I'd probably advise you not to go to the vet, only because I doubt there would be much more they could do than you. I know it's difficult seeing your fish in a situation like this, but try and let nature take its course [the pea may well get dislodged as s/he moves about, else I would think it will almost definately disintegrate - this may cuase other problems, but is not a worry for now]. It's definately a good sign that the fish is still swimming and eating, please try to stay positive!

Hi

I've read all the posts and while I would totally be rushing down the vets, as the non-owner and able to take a step back......

If he is still eating then there must be gaps around the pea - so if he's not too distresed could you bear to wait for another 24 hours and see what happens?

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Judi, did you take my car without asking or did someone else I'd like to know?

BTW, All the work was done for free because I bought the car totaled and used aftermarket parts and had a buddy paint it for me. So In turn it was cheaper than buying a POS.

Looks good, Dont it.
