I have a 10G tank and have been trying to get rid of snails for months now! What fish will be ok for my tank size and will eat the snails & eggs? I can take the fish back to the store after he does his duty, he just needs to stay small long enough to rid the tank of snails. Thanks for your help!

Another customer for "Don's Rent-A-Loach"!

Loaches will clear them out. The most commonly sold is the Clown Loach. They do get far too big for a 10 gallon tank. But as long as you return him after dinner you should be OK.

Try manually removing as many as possible and then cut back on feeding. The population will only grow to what can sustain them. Most fish keepers are guilty of over feeding. I know I do so I skip feeding once a week to help give the tank a chance to catch up. Also, a hungry fish is a healthy fish. Fat fish live shorter.

Haven't I heard it said that if you leave a piece of cucumber in overnight, when you pull it out in the morning it will be covered in snails? That should put a dent in their numbers. (But don't quote me.)

Thanks so much for all your help, I really do appreciate it. I've been trying to get rid of these things for what seems like forever now. I even tore the tank apart and soaked everything in Alum...but they came back anyway!! If only fish were this resiliant!
I think I might try the cucumber until I get a chance to rent-a-loach....lol.
Thanks again,
Heather

Thanks much! I'll check out that link tonight and decide exactly what kind of loach I want to rent! :)

Botia striata has my vote. IMO/IME, the best, most placid/laid back snail eater available. Worth their weight in gold.

Most any of the Botias will eat snails; you just one one that will A) not outgrow the tank and B) not kill your fish ;) Botia striata and Botia dario are excellent choices, indeed.

Ditto. Plus, they stay small, so depending on how heavily stocked your 10 gal. is now, you may be able to get away with a pair of them. Keep up with excellent filtration, though!

I've got 3 of these guys in my 44 gal. tank and they are so cute, plus, they will rid your tank of snails!

Wait a minute. Will ANY Loach eat snails? I have two sand loaches in another tank. Should I just switch them into the snailed tank and see if they do the job before I bring home any new fish? I never thought about it before...the tank the sand loaches are in are snail free...could they be the reason? If not, I'm going to look into a Botia Dario.
Again, thanks so much, I really do appreciate it.

You're not a loach. ;)

And if you *are*, I have dibs on discovering you. I think a typing/talking loach with a good command of the english language would be a very cool creature. Worth a fortune, I'd imagine.

Me: "So, how's that water feelin'?"

Talking Loach: "It STINKS in here! And darn it, I can hardly BREATHE! I mean, c'mon, can't you do a water change at least once a freaking YEAR?! Or at least top off the freaking TANK?! Jeez...."

Me: "Uhh.... yeah. So. Um, see ya 'round, huh?"

Talking Loach: "Hey, get back here!"

Some exceptions. I've not seen kuhlis eat 'em, for instance. Mouths are too small.

By "sand loaches", what do you mean? Got a genus/species? Or a link to a pic? Or a different common name?

Oooh, checked him out on loaches.com, looks like a dario, only dressed up to go out. Attractive little fishy. I think Larry (my dario) just found a friend.

I uploaded a pic of one of the Sand Loaches. Please ignore the algae!
I believe it's a Burmese-Border Sand Loach (Schistura mahnerti). Check it out here http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/schistura_mahnerti.html not a lot of info though, but looks just like the Loaches I have.
So, what say you all? Snail eaters or not? LOL Any help is appreciated. I guess I could just try them in the tank and see.
