Ich. Yuck. High temp/salt tx question. Posted: Aug 13, 2003 12:47 PM

Howdy folks:

Ich has reared its ugly head on my loaches this week. I started the high temp/salt tx yesterday and have a coupla questions.

Tank temp is at 88f now. I've read that is enough to kill the parasite. Do I believe this? Should I kick the temps up to 90 for a day or 2? I've a bubble wand going for surface agitation for those who wondered.

I've also added 11 tbps salt (tis a 55g and had no salt prior). Will this be enough (1 tbsp per 5g)? I'm reading conflicting amounts online. Theres a plec and a bunch of angels in there as well (not concerned bout the plec n salt btw. did research on it; shouldnt be an issue).

And how long should I wait? The lil guy had it worst yesterday; today it looks like less parasites on him BUT, the bigger loach had no visible parasites yesterday and now he has 2. I'd like to avoid chemicals if I can, but I don't want em to suffer. How long should I try the salt/temp tx before I know whether I need to go to a stronger therapy or not?

The raised temperature treatment for Freshwater Ich/Ichthyophthirius multifiliis is 86*F or higher for ten days. The salt treatment is 2 ppt salinity or approximately 7.6 grams os salt per gallon of water. I don't know what that translates into in terms of teaspoons or tablespoons, but you likely to figure this out from the packaging on the salt container.

Damn. Math. LOL

Ok, my temps should be fine then; I won't raise them anymore.

Anyone have a calculation site so I can work out tablespoons into grams? The box of Aquarium salt is NO help. I can prob figure out the ppt from Steve's post (I hope!), but a site to plug in the numbers would make my life SO much easier ;) I checked on the main page, but didn't see anything.

I just dug out my little scale and weighed some Instant Ocean. The smallest increment on my scale is 5 gm. It looked like one teaspoon of IO weighed almost 7.5 gm. I kept going until I got to 75 gm, which took 10.75 tsp of IO. That's about a teaspon shy of 1/4 cup for a 10g tank.
This IO was from the big bucket, which was nicely sealed and protected from humidity.

I also weighed IO that was in a bag which I'd not closed properly. Due to the humidity, the salt has absorbed some moisture. With that, one teaspoon of IO weighed 5 gm.

Looks like the best way to figure out how much salt you really need is to use something that measures salinity -- most hydrometers measure specific gravity. The SeaTest ones also have lines for salinity, but I've no idea how accurate those are.

I checked with Alli and she's got Doc Wellfish's Aquarium Salt. Well, that stuff has such large chunks there's no way you're going to be able to measure it by the teaspoon, or even the tablespoon. So I measured out 75 gm of that salt. It ended up being about a rounded 1/4 cup, and not quite 1/3 cup.

Hey Alli Alli in come free,

Put that salt in a baggie and take the BFH to it..that will make measurement easier..LOL

Good luck "trouble" maker.

Ok. Did a 1/3 water change (figure about 18.3 gallons). At 7.9 grams per gallon, I added not quite 1/2 a cup (139 grams...75 grams = heaping 1/4 cup). I didn't want to overdo the salt, so I only added enough to meet 2 ppt for the amount of water I added (since I don't exactly know the ppt thats already in the tank although I'm guessing its around 1 ppt).

This make any sense? I still only see 2 spots on the big guy; so I'm guessing he's either still somewhat subclinical or this is starting to work.

*prepares for an outbreak of ich in the 10g tank*

Yep. I'm sure its coming. As most of you know, the north east was without power for a while today. So I grabbed my trusty quart measuring cup, and spent a few mins every hour dumping water in and out of the 55g filters and the tank itself. Hubby asks me, after I wander out of the room, if he should do the 10g. Not thinking I say "Of course! I forgot. Thanx!". Yep. He used the same measuring cup. Shoot me. Auuuggghh!

Quick update:

As of yesterday all visible signs of ich are gone! Kept the salt levels at 3 ppm (thanx for the hydrometer tip Ananda) and the temp at 88f. I'll continue for another week to be sure the tank is cleared.

Thanx folks :)
